The £1 Whitehawk bus fare will now run until 31 March 2027
Almost 16,000 journeys have been made at the discounted fare on the 1 and 21 since it launched at the beginning of July.
The £1 Whitehawk Link fare, for journeys on the 1 and 21 buses within the Whitehawk zone, has been extended until 31 March 2027. It had been due to end on 30 September.
Almost 16,000 journeys have been made at the discounted fare since it launched at the beginning of July. In research during the pilot, the share of respondents using it for trips to shops and other services rose from 19% to 29%, and for visits to friends and family from 5% to 16%.
Brighton & Hove City Council is paying for the extension from its £1.4m Local Authority Bus Grant. The same money funds free travel for council care leavers living in the city, free travel for up to four children under 19 with a fare-paying adult, the Breeze up to the Downs buses, and citySAVER tickets at the Travel Shop priced to match online.
Trevor Muten, the council’s cabinet member for transport and city infrastructure, said the council had seen “strong take-up of the scheme”.
Whitehawk is in the government’s Pride in Place programme, which gives the area access to up to £20m of investment over 10 years.
The £1 fare can be paid by tap on/tap off, on mobile or in cash on board.
