Hove Museum

Free museum with a lovely garden, great for kids

5.1/10

Local score

No. 12 of 25 places to visit on r/brighton, from 11 locals across 15 threads.

100% would send a mate. Still recommended in 2026.

Locals rate it as a nice building with interesting grounds, good for a quiet visit with young kids (old toys, dressing-up, a tiny cinema). It's free to enter, ties into Brighton's early film history, and comes up repeatedly as a good rainy-day or kill-time option.

What locals say

If you're at the Falmer campus I recommend walking over to Falmer Pond. It's been my favourite place since I was a kid. Other places to visit, I'd say would be Rookery and the walled garden at Preston Park. Hove Museum is a nice building with interesting grounds. Booth natural history museum is a real quirk of Brighton. For architecture, take a look around the seafront squares of Sussex Square/Lewes Crescent in Kemptown then Brunswick and Adelaide squares further along the front to Hove. There's the floral clock at…

…Pier entrance is the artist quarter, maybe worth a visit! Lots of inspiration and small side-streets that may catch your eye! Enjoy! I'd definitely spend most of tomorrow doing the outdoorsy bits - looks like Thurs will be decent/sunny, but rainy on Friday :( Toy Museum, Hove Museum and the Pavilion Museum/Art Galleries are good options for rainier days, or finding a cafe in the North Laine to chill at! The Painting Pottery Café is a shout too for a rainy solo day, too! Enjoy!!

No it’s in Hove Museum on Church Road. There’s old toys, dressing up, a tiny cinema …… Always quiet too, so your toddler can run riot. Used to take my 2 all the time when they were…

…unless you pick a really peak time. Bodiam Castle is gorgeous and you may be able to get the Kent and East Sussex Railway steam train from Tenterden to the Castle on some days in May. Normally busy but not too packed. Sorry if these suggestions are rubbish due to no car! Hove Museum of Ceativity is small but does have some nice Brighton-orientated stuff in there and is a nice building in a nice garden which in May will look nice with blossoms etc. There's also a quirky book called 111 Places in Brighton and Lewes You Shouldn't Miss which, if you don't have a car, you could do by…
