A roughly 600-year-old countryside pub in Kingston near Lewes, popular as a stop on the Lewes-Brighton downland walk. Redditors praise the food and beer and single out the Sussex Smokey dish, and it's been used for wedding receptions; one person noted the ploughman's used to be good.

What locals say

You can walk from Woodingdean (just up from the Downs Hotel) to Lewes via Kingston. It’s got some good views and a nature reserve along the way. The Juggs in Kingston is really nice pub to stop off by on an Autumn afternoon.

The Juggs in Kingston is great, stopped there on the same walk last year. Can’t recommend the Sussex Smokey enough.

On a Sunday get a 2 or 22 bus up to the Downs Hotel in Woodingdean. Just up the road from there, there is footpath over the downs towards Kingston-near-Lewes. Get a pint (and a roast?) in the Juggs pub in Kingston, then continue your walk to Lewes. Get a pint at the Harveys in Lewes and have a look at the castle. Get a bus home.
