Hove seafront bakery locals rate above the rest

6.4/10

Local score

No. 40 of 141 cafés on r/brighton, from 16 locals across 12 threads.

100% would send a mate. Still recommended in 2026.

Regularly tops bakery threads for sourdough, pastries (hazelnut-chocolate croissants, Turkish eggs on the breakfast menu) and celebration cakes people order for birthdays. The original branch is on Hove seafront near the King Alfred, with a South Lanes spot also mentioned as a good place to sit and hang out. One regular loves the sausage rolls and pastries but says the coffee doesn't match up.

Go for
Sourdough, pastries and a proper birthday cake
Heads up
Coffee doesn't match the quality of the baked goods, per one regular

What locals say

Sugardough bakery does excellent cakes, and they have a large selection of freshly baked options. My partner ordered me a tart for my birthday from there. They deliver as well.

I agree Hellenic bakery it's generally really good. Really recommend also Sugardough, pretty much everything is excellent there. My fav all around, though are the cinnamon buns from the Flour Pot, they are just something.

…going to do that I would definitely do these... - Macarons - julien Plumart on Queens road - Cake - Cloud 9 - Doughnuts - the pier - Fancy chocolate - either be chocolat on Duke Street, or if you fancy a bit more of a walk, Rainbow Organic in the Open Market - Croissants - Sugardough in the south lanes - Ice cream/sundaes - Gelato Gusto (several locations) or Boho Gelato (the pool valley location is better) - Sushi - Moshimo, or again for a bit more of a walk tropical sushi would be fun!

Cielo all the way. They have made us countless Birthday cakes and they made our Wedding cake! Their gluten free and vegan stuff is completely indistinguishable from anything 'normal' and it's absolutely delicious. We do like Sugardough for the more 'traditional' bakery items like bread and pastries, but if you just want sweet treats, you can't go wrong with Cielo!
