Brighton's dedicated jazz club on Edward Street near Kemptown, described as small and old-school - a seated basement room like a little theatre with a bar upstairs for the interval. Regulars say the acts are excellent though you'll usually have to pay, and it's more a serious listening room than a casual chat-over-drinks bar.
- Go for
- Serious jazz fans wanting a proper listening room
- Heads up
- Seated, formal vibe - not for a casual chat
What locals say
Monday, Bees mouth normally quite contemporary modern jazz. Tuesday, Brunswick Jazz Jam, a bit of everything through the ages Weds, Bristol Bar Thursday/friday, your best bet is the Verdict but will have to pay, but they get good acts. Casablanca for more live funk and soul Sunday = several Jazz roasts all over town 3 Jolly Butchers, Lion and Lobster, Paris House, Hand in hand, Better half, George…
I think for a date you’re best with a jazz night at Paris House or The Wick - more informal and easy to chat and drink The Verdict is the dedicated jazz club in town. It has fantastic acts, but it’s a bit more serious: rows of seating in a basement, like a little theatre, plus a bar upstairs for drinks in intermission.
If your looking to listen, mainly the Verdict. Also The Bees Mouth, Paris House and Brunswick. If you want to play there are jam sessions on Monday at the Bees Mouth, Tuesday at the Brunswick, and later in the year there will be some at the Verdict, but not during the summer.
Have a look at the Verdict Jazz Club. Is seated with tables downstairs. Gets a bit warm. I be only been once, it was very good. Not very big so very close to stage.
