Free lecture at Falmer on how computer models can pick cancer treatment
Professor Simon Mitchell gives his inaugural lecture on virtual tumours at Brighton and Sussex Medical School. It's free and open to all, but you need to book.
Simon Mitchell, a cancer researcher at Brighton and Sussex Medical School, will give a free public lecture at Falmer on Thursday 19 November. His subject is how computer simulations can predict the best cancer treatment for each person. It starts at 6.30pm in the Chowen Lecture Theatre and is open to anyone, but places must be booked.
Mitchell is Professor of Cancer Systems Biology at the medical school and co-director of the Sussex Cancer Research Centre. His starting point is that no two people are the same, and neither are any two cancers. His lecture is titled Predicting cancer, personalising care. He will show how virtual tumours can help find the right treatment for each cancer. Computer simulation can predict how cancer might progress, or which treatment might work best for each person.
The models use the same mix of maths and computing that is used to forecast the weather and the stock market. The university says the talk is for healthcare professionals and patients, and for anyone curious about how medicine is changing.
This is the first of the University of Brighton’s inaugural lectures for this academic year. Newly appointed professors give them to explain their research and how they came to it. A reception follows, where people from the university and the wider community can keep talking. The spring series will be announced in December.
Register online at least 48 hours before the lecture. The venue is the BSMS Teaching Building on the University of Sussex campus at Falmer, BN1 9PX.
