Eva Kalpadaki's sea meditation photographs are on show on Hove seafront
Each print is 11 frames shot a minute apart while she meditated by the sea. They are up by the railings at Lansdowne Place until 30 October.
The Brighton photographer Eva Kalpadaki is showing two large prints on the seafront by Lansdowne Place, on the spot where she made them. The show, SA TA NA MA, is part of Photo Fringe and runs until 30 October.
Each image is 11 photographs of the sea. Kalpadaki sat in front of her camera with her eyes closed and did the Kundalini Yoga meditation SA TA NA MA, which lasts 11 minutes. The camera took one frame a minute. A 12th minute of silence follows the meditation, so the final position in each image is left empty. Sky and sea fill half the frame each time.
On the Photo Fringe page she writes that meditating daily by the sea helped her keep her balance during Covid. “The seafront is my happy place,” she told the Argus.
Kalpadaki, who is from Greece, was picked for Bloomberg New Contemporaries in 2008. The prints are up at set hours, and she stands beside them with the tripod she used. Everything is weather permitting, and she asks visitors to email before coming. She is also giving a free talk on the seafront on Friday 16 October and a free online talk on 22 October.
The show was first reported by the Argus.
