A small Japanese supermarket on Fenchurch Walk opposite the big Sainsbury's, loved for fresh onigiri (from £1.70), sushi-grade/frozen sashimi fish, single-serve mochi, miso, sushi rice, sake and matcha kit. Posters describe the owners as a lovely, friendly family, praise the prices and reduced-stock bargains, though it doesn't stock the large Sapporo cans.

What locals say

…very welcome! I absolutely love Kantenya, every time I'm nearby I pop in there and grab an onigiri, they're so tasty 🤤🍙 the owners are a super nice japanese family so I definitely recommend the shop, gotta support small local businesses!

New favourite is Kantenya near big Sains off London Road. £1.70 Onigiri made fresh in store, meal deal £3-5 (can’t quite remember 😅) rice and protein like chicken teriyaki or katsu, super lunch deals!!!

Kantenya is excellent, though leans more towards Japanese food (also Korean bits). Time for Kimchi is Korean specific and small, but very good kimchi. Asiamart is a good all rounder, and is priced better than YumYum I think, which markup pretty heavily.

Kantenya is awesome. Last time I was there I got a big bag of good quality sushi rice for a nice price. They’re also perhaps the best place in town to get miso and seem to sell it in brands/sizes you don’t find elsewhere. I recommend keeping an eye on their reduced stuff too. Proper bargains to be had.
