Loam on Gloucester Road is repeatedly named among Brighton's best for espresso, filter and curated beans, with the cinnamon swirls getting particular love. A couple of people found a single cup acrid or too fruity for their taste, but most defend it as consistently excellent, calling the owner lovely.
- Go for
- Excellent espresso and famous cinnamon buns
- Heads up
- Coffee runs fruity - not to everyone's taste
What locals say
As the very proud owner of No13 Coffee on Lewes Road, it's really made my day to see us mentioned here a couple of times. Thank you! We work really hard to get the coffee (and treats) as good as we can get it, so it's always nice to see that it's appreciated. IMHO Loam in the North Laine continues to be one of the best places to get an excellent espresso shot in Brighton, closely followed by Casco (although they are a little on the pricey side), and coming in third, I really like Cup Of Joe in Kemptown; the coffee's acceptable but the vibe is lovely.
Think you must have been really unlucky with Loam as they've always been excellent when I've gone. Cinnamon swirls are divine. Coffee@33 staff actually recommended them to me a while back.
I absolutely love Loam. Definitely some of the best coffee in Brighton. Something must’ve gone very wrong with the coffee you had. Shame you weren’t far away to pop back; the guy who owns it is absolutely lovely and would’ve sorted it for you I’m sure.
1. Stoney Point, 2. Coffee@33, 3. Ikigai (fairly new place on Queens Road) are all banging and on a par. So many places I used to rate are terrible. Someone recommended LOAM to me recently and it was the worst, most acrid, burnt coffee I’ve ever had. For £4. Made it too far to work to take it back. Avoid that place.
