A traditional Harveys pub on Trafalgar Street near the station, praised for well-priced cask ale, a Tuesday quiz locals call properly tricky, and a decent Sunday roast. It has a free-to-hire conservatory function room and is generally quiet, though the outdoor space is described as tiny.

What locals say
Good beers and a bit pricey. Good companions: Decent outside seating, big. Just generally middle-of-the-road decent pub. Mesmerist: Popular and nice-side-of-rowdy, plays music loud enough for people to dance a bit but not so loud you have to shout. Nice little roof terrace. Lord Nelson: Traditional boozer. Decent.
Lord Nelson, you'll get a few things besides Best there too. Probably a bit too early for Old, sadly. Get them to come back in October.
…outdoor area probably not open yet. But a good spectrum of beers and amazing Bao to eat. Battle of Trafalgar - near the station but tucked away enough to avoid football and tourists. Full of older locals most days, affordable beer, fairly good food, beer garden at the back. Lord Nelson - a Harvey's pub. So the Harvey's ales are well priced. Decent food, a good Sunday roast too. Outdoor space is tiny and just for smoking though. Trying to think of these places has reminded me that it's been over a year since I set foot in any of them!
In terms of pubs just avoid West Street, it’s all down to individual taste but I would say pubs in the North Laine area are a good shout; The Basketmakers, Lord Nelson Inn, North Laine, The Prince Albert, The White Rabbit etc. Here is the North Laine area on Google…
