Ship Street cafe-bar with chess nights and live gigs

Local score

No. 53 of 141 cafés on r/brighton, from 21 locals across 21 threads.

100% would send a mate. Still recommended in 2026.

Redditors like this Ship Street cafe-bar for its chilled vibe, vegan dim sim, and weekly chess club on Tuesdays. It's open late (till 10-11pm) for coffee, wine and beer, with a big outdoor patio, laptop plugs, and live gigs upstairs. A few say it's hidden away and can get busy, so it's not always quiet.

Go for
Coffee by day, drinks and live music by night
Heads up
Can get busy and isn't always as quiet as hoped

Pink Moon just next to The Ivy is open till 11pm, they have a really nice indoor space that always seems really chilled.

You’ve only really got East street tap Brighton Rocks bar (Kemptown, a sorta hidden gem) Bees mouth Maybeee dead wax but it’s become kinda shite Pink Moon (they always got a great playlist, live gigs upstairs too, it’s a cafe in the day open every night till late for drinks) Daltons on the seafront is an obvious but that’s more live music we’re talking Hope that helps :)

Kenny's Rockin soul cafe. It's cheap and cheerful (ish) for brighton. And it's cute but can be packed out on the w/e. Also a fan of Pink Moon and Shogun Ramen (really good ramen small joint and perfect for a single diner).
