This Ship Street pub is repeatedly praised for its pub food, especially the fish and chips and a Sunday roast that's usually available even without booking, plus good vegan and gluten-free roast options. It hosts live music some evenings and one Redditor calls it their outright favourite pub in Brighton, though ownership has changed hands a few times over the years.

What locals say

The Ginger Pig in hove is a nice pub/ restaurant, probably more on the restaurant side. The Lion and lobster has good pub food, as does Seven Stars. The Walrus has really nice food and an outdoor area at the top that is sort of indoors so protected from the wind, not 100% sure you can eat up there though? Hope that helps!

…lovely scenery. 7. For nightlife there are soooooo many bars and clubs. Im older and don’t do a lot of clubbing these days, but check out reviews. Intend to stick to bars and pubs in hove. 8. Roast dinners if it’s a Sunday You’re travelling - The Howard, The Bell Tower, Seven Stars, The Connaught and Hove Place but can be pricey. Just a few ideas for you :)

…a table - is peace of mind and also having worked in pubs, it’s nice to know if a big table is coming in and not a surprise on a Saturday night as often table space can be a hot commodity - I’ve done similar at: The Walrus - nice but not too cosy & a bit of a chain pub vibe Seven Stars - better than the above but smaller so may be trickier to get a table North Laine - brewery in house if you like that sort of things and big refectory tables Good Companions - decent size but if you drink Guiness it may be worth taking out a second…

Mrs Fitzherbert’s Mash Tun Mesmirist Black lion The above are pubs you can either sit outside or be inside and dance in. Seven Stars is good to sit and chat but still lively enough.
