A new creative space opens above Revolution on West Street on Sunday

Brighton Playhouse² opens on Sunday 11 October in a room above Revolution at 77 West Street. Bex Roberts, director of the UK Improv Society, and Simon Topping, who runs the Extra Topping³ comedy nights and Brighton improv club, founded it this summer. Theatre-News reported the opening this week.

It is meant as a place for workshops, performances and community events, with jams, scratch nights and artist development on the calendar alongside shows.

“Brighton isn’t exactly short of creative people,” said Roberts. “I wanted to give all those performers, makers, musicians, comedians, and artists somewhere to find each other, because that’s when things get interesting.”

Sunday starts at 12pm with a comedy brunch hosted by Leslie Bloom, Topping’s alter ego. From 2.30pm there are three free 45-minute taster sessions: collage-making with A for Antoine, body percussion with Brighton Circle Music, and wordless improv with Roberts. From 7pm, Make It Beautiful Theatre Company performs The Dream Machine and Yes Anderson do an improvised show inspired by the films of Wes Anderson. Indie Brighton’s⁴ listings say the day ends with karaoke.

Tickets for the opening events are on Eventbrite.

Extra Topping has moved to the Playhouse and now runs on the third Sunday of the month. The next show is on 18 October, 7pm to 9pm, with doors at 6.30pm.
