The Rose Hill turns 10 with a three-day festival, 23 to 25 October
The venue on Rose Hill Terrace is marking 10 years with music on two floors. Sunday is free entry.
The Rose Hill music venue and studios is celebrating 10 years. It is marking the decade with a festival across both its floors from Friday 23 to Sunday 25 October. There will be live music, DJs, performances and installations.
Friday runs from 7pm to 11pm. Faye Houston and Mike Shirley are a guitar and vocal duo. Nimzo Studio is the guitarist and composer Lee Westwood with the “synth obsessor and field recordist” Jules Arthur. Minor Dents are a kosmische space rock trio. The artist Rachel Cohen is re-hanging her 2003 installation Fruit Machine 2003 in the smoking area.
Saturday is an all-dayer from 3pm to midnight. The Japanese turntablist dj sniff (Takuro Mizuta Lippit) uses self-built instruments and is based in Los Angeles and Tokyo. The venue is catching him while he is in the UK. Bunty, one of the venue’s creative directors, makes beats and harmonies entirely from her voice, effects pedals and sound toys.
Gnawa London, a three-piece band led by Simo Lagnawi, also plays. The Mehfil Space presents the Khayal singer Shishir Rao and the tabla player Junaid Ali in a 45-minute set of south Asian classical music. More Saturday acts are to be announced.
Sunday, from 2pm to 9pm, is a “chilled Sunday free entry all day social” with what the venue calls “some very special guests”. That line-up hasn’t been announced yet.
The building was a tavern. The Save The Rose Hill Community Group saved it from property developers in 2015, and the venue says it was the first building in Brighton to be listed as an Asset of Community Value. The current owners then reopened it as a music venue and studios. They live upstairs.
“We know we’re just a tiny space on a back street of Brighton, but The Rose Hill has blossomed into a place with genuine cultural significance,” the venue wrote on the festival page.
It also admits the tickets cost more than usual “due to all the artists playing”. A weekend ticket is £27, or £20 for concessions. Friday alone is £15 in advance and Saturday £19, with cheaper concession tickets and a limited number of pay-what-you-can tickets.
