A York Place Chinese restaurant with two menus - locals say to bypass the standard sweet-and-sour British-Chinese options and order from the separate Chinese/Hunan-language menu for proper, more authentic dishes (order the non-spicy hotpot unless you mean it). Rated reasonable value and good for groups, though one reviewer says it's "not rated the highest" despite generously packed rice boxes.
- Go for
- Authentic Chinese food for groups
- Heads up
- Stick to the Chinese-language menu, not the western one
What locals say
Chinese here, just saying eating a Chinese hotpot in Brighton (or the UK) is quite pricey, didn't think it justifies the price. Having said that, I've tried Lucky Star and Full House. Lucky Star was standard (like how I would expect from a Chinese hotpot places in China). Full House is more authentic, just order the non spicy one as the spicy one... is really spicy! Also heard good stuff about Mr Wangs, haven't tried that though.
Go to Full House for Chinese food from Hunan. Avoid the normal Catonese style menu (sweet and sour balls, chow mein etc) and go through the proper Chinese menu, some proper traditional food. We can do drinks and enough food for two adults and two hungry kids for around £75, so £50 should be good for two.
Thirded. Full House is pretty good and reasonable value. Cuts a nice balance between 'western' Chinese food and 'authentic' Chinese food.
…duck/rice/pork. Gutted! For me the closest at the moment to that classic duck feel is HK Place, also on Preston Street - they do a bangin' beef brisket, too! Others have mentioned Magic Wok - duck isn't bad imo - price wise, it's quick and decently priced I also order from Full House - not rated the highest to be fair, but their rice boxes are packed to the brim!
