Magic Wok

Preston Street's favourite Chinese, hit or miss

5.5/10

Local score

No. 125 of 300 places to eat on r/brighton, from 29 locals across 19 threads.

88% would send a mate.

Redditors mostly rate Magic Wok as their go-to cheap Chinese, praising the salt-and-chilli ribs, salt and pepper chips, crispy lamb and singapore chow mein, and calling portions generous for the price. It's inconsistent though: a vocal minority call it 'absolute shite' and describe recent orders as flavourless, gloopy and a waste of money.

What locals say

…Probably the limit of their delivery radius. Best salt + chilli chicken I have tried. Kudos 40 - 7/10 food for 2018 prices - you know it is a quality Chinese takeaway when the parents/aunts/uncles are in the kitchen, and you are served by someone doing their GCSE homework. Magic Wok - Best crispy lamb in Brighton. HK Place - closes early, the food is 10/10 though. Decent prices, inflated by 20% for apps, but in the restaurant it is very affordable. It was recommended by a Chinese hotel owner back in 2022, been eating there at least 2x a week ever since.

…place! Sadly a few good places (Ho Chaik and Good Friends) closed down - they did some solid duck/rice/pork. Gutted! For me the closest at the moment to that classic duck feel is HK Place, also on Preston Street - they do a bangin' beef brisket, too! Others have mentioned Magic Wok - duck isn't bad imo - price wise, it's quick and decently priced I also order from Full House - not rated the highest to be fair, but their rice boxes are packed to the brim!

Magic Wok on Preston Street do Salt and Pepper chips which are the closest (that I know if) to what you're asking. They also do your usual British takeaway Chinese fair. Also give Danny's a try on Portland Road.

That is a nice surprise to read because I had the worst Chinese I've ever had from Magic Wok about a month ago. It was so flavourless and gloopy, really disgusting and I felt like I'd totally wasted my money. Glad someone else had a good experience!
