Small Sicilian-run cafe on Portland Road, Hove, repeatedly called some of the best Italian food around, cooked from scratch by a couple who'll happily chat. Reasonably priced, does a good iced coffee, though at one point was only open for lunch.

What locals say

Cin cin on Western Road is good food but they make you sit at a counter which I dislike! Casalingo on Preston Street is great. Mediterraneo near Dukes is Sicilian, tiny and run by a really passionate couple. And then I’m also a sucker for the cheapo Italians like Donatello’s and Pinocchios.

A bit into Hove is Sunshine Cafe which is refreshingly cheap or also reasonable, a bit further into Hove is Mediterraneo, cooked from scratch by a delightful Sicilian couple and they will even engage you in charming chat if you fancy.

Mediterraneo Cafe, Portland Road Hove. Run by a wonderful Sicilian family/couple afaik. Used to run a restaurant that was incredible.

Depends how far in to Hove you are. FIKA is great but if you’re further toward Portslade then I’d recommend either Mediterraneo on Portland Road or you can’t beat a pastrami deli sandwich from Flour Pot bakery.
