Reddit's go-to shout for punk, metal and hardcore gigs, with regular shows crammed into a tiny room upstairs, a rock/metal jukebox, and a reputation as one of the last proper rock bars in Brighton. The chicken satay burger gets a specific shoutout, and the manager says room hire is just £25 for unestablished promoters, though one commenter felt it 'lacks character' compared to other rock bars.

What locals say

Dalton's is the place for underground gigs at the moment so definitely check out what's on there. The Metal to the Masses heats will be on there soon. The Pipeline is also a great little bar and does a lot of small gigs, mix of metal and punk. Has a good jukebox too. The Yellow book and the Caz are fine but not what they used to be. The Green Door Store occasionally has some good gigs on, as does the Prince Albert. If you're really into gigs I'd recommend…

The Pipeline is probably your best bet for a metal/rock bar and it literally has a jukebox you can choose music on. Second best option would be the Yellow book as a nice play to sit with heavy music in rotation. If you do want live music, check out Dalton's on the seafront as it often has gigs all week and…

Someone already said Caroline of Brunswick, but I'll say it also - big cerebrus sculpture at the entrance, times I've been they've either had a metal/alternative playlist or a jukebox where people are encouraged to play metal/punk/hardcore. The Pipeline in the Lanes might be worth checking out, quite often have punk/hardcore/similar shows in their tiny room upstairs. I don't know if I'd call it them alternative bars but the Hope and Ruin (Queens Road) and East Street Tap (Lanes) will quite often have alternative music and have that kind of vibe. Prince…

Not really, no. The Caroline is horrible and depressing, or at least it seems that way after you've been a regular there for a while. Its proximity to London Road means that you also end up getting hassled by London Road types asking to scrounge a pint or some drugs off you. The Pipeline is ok but lacks character. And that's it - that's our entire compliment of actual rock/metal bars in this city. Sure, Sticky Mike's or Green Door Store or the Albert will have the occasional metal or alternative gig or club night, but go there on another night and they'll be churning out chart/indie/some…
