Preston Park Tavern

Brighton's best Sunday roast, worth the hill

Repeatedly named the best Sunday roast in Brighton, up the hill near Fiveways, with good gluten-free options, a covered beer garden and a dog-friendly reputation. A few locals miss its old days as an unpretentious boozer before it was refurbished into more of a gastropub.

What locals say

People are going to get sarky because you didn't use the search function, but kitchens change all the time so it's a legit question to keep asking. Preston Park Tavern is always good. Southern Belle gets a lot of good press, Cleveland Arms used to be the best hands down but disappointing the last time I went. I just booked for Daddy Longlegs this weekend. I'm sure if it's anything like the rest of their food, it will be excellent.

I live nearby. There are several decent, if expensive, pubs in the area including the Preston Park Tavern, Park View, The Cleveland, The Pub at Fiveways and Lost and Found. On Ditchling Road immediately north of Fiveways there are several take away, delis, an Italian restaurant, a bakers, two cafes, a co-op, flower shop, arts and crafts shop, a nice fruit and veg shop, and a few others. I know it’s not city centre but Preston Park Tavern is very good. More central I’d say The Geese or Alberta’s at The Windmill for something slightly different. Not a far walk. My experience of Town is that they’re not as good as pubs in more residential areas.

The Cleveland is way worse since they stripped the place out and put that nasty conservatory on the side. Preston Park Tavern also used to be a nice locals pub before it got stripped and turned into a gastropub/ creche. I’m not a fan of the hare and hounds but I agree that it’s better than it used to be.
