The Lanes' fish and chips, worth the walk from the beach

Consistently named Brighton's best fish and chips, tucked away on Meeting House Lane in the South Lanes rather than the seafront. Regulars praise the fresh fish and standout tartar sauce, plus a quirky vodka-and-pickled-herring shot on the side, though a few find the triple-cooked-style chips too crunchy for a classic chippy.

What locals say

The best fish and chips shops are mostly not on the seafront. My recommendation is RYBKA which is in the south lanes on Meeting House Lane. If you don't want strong tasting/smelling fish, then the best bet would be cod or haddock which is what you'll find at all fish and chip shops pretty much, so if that's too strong for you, maybe just stick with some good fish and chip shop chips, curry sauce…

…people come to visit and they inevitably want fish and chips on the beach, I take them to Captains. It's a bit overpriced but it tastes nice and it has the seaside location for the fish-and-chips-on-the-beach pictures people want. They're also really lovely with children. Rybka is my personal favourite but convincing people to come and eat in the Lanes when they came for the beach is a hard sell.

Rybka is the best fish and chips I've had and I'm not a fan of fish of chips generally but they were excellent Afternoon Tea at the Grand A walk along the seafront to Hove is a good shout if the weather is good. Plenty of nice brunch places in Hove like Jo & Co, Oeuf, Hixon Green. A ride up the i360 A boat trip…

I don’t like the chips from RYBKA - they’re too crunchy like triple cooked burger or steak chips. Chip shop chips should always be soft…
