A dimly lit, bustling North Laine craft beer pub, refurbished from a dated look into its current trendier form, with a good beer selection and a Sunday roast rated among the city's best. It's a popular first-date spot, but it's also repeatedly called one of Brighton's most overpriced pubs, and one commenter says it 'no longer qualifies as a pub.'

What locals say

Brighton Bier: Friendly, great own-brewed beers, The World’s End: Nice beers (edit: nice selection of beers, but not well kept) massive. Fun arcade games and a racetrack. William the Fourth: nice, dimly lit, semi-trendy and bustling pub in the North Laine. Good beers and a bit pricey. Good companions: Decent outside seating, big. Just generally middle-of-the-road decent pub. Mesmerist: Popular and nice-side-of-rowdy, plays music loud enough for people to dance a bit but not so loud…

Hop round a few pubs in the North Laine area if you like a bustling and mixed crowd. White Rabbit, William the Fourth, Mash Tun, Wagon and Horses, Eagle… all a few mins walk apart and pretty much every pub in between is worth popping into. If you want cheap booze/like watching Love Island and shopping in malls then all West Street is fair game for getting smashed, going to Vodka Revolution and abusing kebab shop…

There are hundreds. Some of my faves are (these are very spread around B&H FY) : Constant Service, Barley Mow, The Village, Bear Inn, Robin Hood, William The Fourth, Cooper's Cask, The Connaught, Stirling Arms, Ancient Mariner.

Its all subjective but the William The Fourth roast I had a couple of months back was decidedly average. Everything tasted like it was over…
