Sea Lanes makes the Guardian's list of Britain's 10 best heated lidos
The 50-metre pool on Madeira Drive is heated to a minimum of 19C year-round. Saltdean Lido, which opens only in December this winter, is mentioned too.
Sea Lanes, the outdoor pool on Madeira Drive, is one of 10 picks in the Guardian’s guide to Britain’s best heated lidos, published on 14 October. The Argus reported the listing locally.
The Guardian calls the pool a “stepping stone to the sea”, the phrase Sea Lanes uses about itself. The pool opened in 2023 and is 50 metres long, with six lanes. The water is heated to a minimum of 19C all year, cooler than most on the list: Hathersage in Derbyshire was at 27C when the Guardian wrote its guide, and Hampton Pool in London runs at 28C.
Sea Lanes says the pool will remain open all year. All swims must be pre-booked. A booking covers an hour, but if the pool isn’t full you can carry on. All swimmers must wear a swim hat. The pool is chlorinated.
The same entry mentions Saltdean Lido, four miles along the seafront. The 1938 pool opens only in December this winter, heated to 19C, with a separately run sauna.
