Georginio scores twice as Albion beat Kauno Zalgiris 4-0 at the Amex
Jack Hinshelwood and Matt O'Riley also scored in Albion's opening Conference League league-phase match. Next up is Crystal Palace at the Amex on Sunday.
Albion beat FK Kauno Žalgiris 4-0 at the Amex on Thursday 15 October in their first match of the UEFA Conference League league phase. Georginio scored twice, and Jack Hinshelwood and Matt O’Riley got the others.
Albion made eight changes from the side that won 2-0 at Sunderland. After 30 minutes they had had 84% of the ball, but the first goal waited until four minutes before the break. Georginio tucked in Ibrahim Osman’s cutback. It was ruled out at first, then given after VAR stepped in. Hinshelwood fired home a second in the final moments of the half.
Georginio and Osman combined again after 53 minutes for a near copy of the first. Shortly afterwards O’Riley nodded back across goal and into the bottom right corner to make it 4-0.
“We showed a good performance, a disciplined performance, a performance where we kept a clean sheet and a performance where a lot of players used the opportunities,” Albion boss Fabian Hurzeler told Sky Sports.
Brighton fans filled three-quarters of the South Stand and traded songs with the North Stand all through the first half. The last European night at the Amex was in March 2024, when Danny Welbeck scored the only goal against Roma but Albion went out of the Europa League after losing 4-0 away.
Albion are away at FK Jablonec on Thursday 22 October (5.45pm) and at Getafe on 5 November. The next home game in Europe is Universitatea Craiova on 26 November. Our preview of the Kauno Zalgiris game has more on the league phase.
First comes Crystal Palace at the Amex on Sunday 18 October, kick-off 2pm, live on Sky Sports. Pascal Struijk is available. An independent Regulatory Commission upheld a claim of wrongful dismissal over his red card at Sunderland on 10 October and removed his one-match suspension.
