Gambling, vape and fossil fuel ads would be barred from council sites

Cabinet will be asked on Thursday to approve a new advertising policy. It also aims to earn more from ads, starting with a pilot on three to five sites.

Adverts for gambling, tobacco, vapes, payday loans and fossil fuel companies would be barred from advertising space and sponsorship that Brighton & Hove City Council owns or manages, under a policy going to the council’s Cabinet on Thursday 15 October. Cabinet will be asked to approve it, and to sign the council up to the Coalition to End Gambling Ads.

Madeira Terrace's new lift takes shape, with the first 28 arches due this winter

The lift will link Madeira Drive and Marina Parade 24 hours a day. The council now expects the first phase to be finished this winter, later than planned.

The new lift at Madeira Terrace is taking shape, as the first phase of restoring the seafront arches moves on. Once open, the lift will give 24-hour access between Madeira Drive and Marina Parade.

IL Bistro in the Lanes marks 50 years with a £35 anniversary dinner

Michael Garman opened it in 1976, billing it as Brighton's first Mediterranean steakhouse. His son Abe now runs it, and the birthday dinner is on 29 October.

IL Bistro, a small Italian and French restaurant in the Lanes, opened in 1976 and is now marking 50 years. On Thursday 29 October it is holding a three-course anniversary dinner for £35 a head, with the price covering two wine pairings.

Veterans

Veterans affected by the armed forces LGBT ban have until 12 December to claim

Payments are £50,000 for those dismissed and up to £20,000 for other harm. The council wants local veterans to apply, and free help is on offer.

Veterans affected by the armed forces ban on LGBT personnel have until 11:59pm on Saturday 12 December to apply for a Ministry of Defence recognition payment. Brighton & Hove City Council is asking local veterans to register, and anyone who knows one to tell them about the scheme.
