The Coal Shed turns 15 with a £35 beef lunch at 2011 prices
The North Street steak restaurant is serving a three-course anniversary menu at lunchtime, Monday to Thursday, between 12 and 25 October.
The Coal Shed opened in Boyce Street in 2011. For its 15th birthday the steak restaurant, now on North Street, is serving a three-course anniversary menu for £35 a head, which it bills as 2011 prices.
The menu runs from Monday 12 to Sunday 25 October, but only at lunchtime: Monday to Thursday, 12pm to 5pm. It is designed to share, with a minimum of two guests per table.
What’s on it
It is beef all the way through. The starter is Jacob’s Ladder, slow-cooked beef short rib with a bourbon glaze and pickled cucumber. Then comes dry-aged chateaubriand with peppercorn sauce and beef dripping chips. Pudding is sticky toffee pudding with a beef fat caramel and vanilla ice cream.
A wine pairing costs another £35 and brings three glasses: a Shiraz with the starter, a Malbec with the steak and a Recioto della Valpolicella with pudding. The restaurant says all its meat comes from Hannan’s.
“When we opened The Coal Shed in Brighton in 2011, everything centred around great produce, fire and generous hospitality,” founder Raz Helalat said in comments published by Brighton and Hove News. “This menu gives us the chance to bring back some of the dishes our earliest guests still remember, at a price inspired by where it all began.”
Fifteen years on
The restaurant cooks over coals. It has since moved to a larger home in North Street, at Clarence House, and opened a branch in London. The London restaurant is serving the same menu at the same time.
Its parent company, Black Rock, has opened more places in Brighton since, including Burnt Orange, Tutto and the Crazy Goose, which now fills the original Boyce Street unit.
In Brighton the menu runs alongside OctoberBEST, the city’s restaurant festival. Book through the restaurant’s website or email info@coalshed-restaurant.co.uk. The restaurant is cashless.
