A cherished 'dark and dingy' dive bar/grotto on Western Road, loved for its quirky decor, Belgian beers and regular live/experimental music, including a well-regarded Monday jazz night. Open late most nights, though it's also been flagged as one of the pricier pints in Brighton (£13.33).
- Go for
- A late-night pint in a proper dive bar
- Heads up
- Pricey pints - one of the most expensive in town
What locals say
…hang a left into North Laine there are loads of independent bars, restaurants, shops, a comedy club/cinema and the Pavillion andMuseum are worth visiting for history too. If you are out late the best pubs are Black dove in Kemptown, Lion and Lobster in central Brighton and the Bees Mouth on the hove border. Casablanca’s jazz club is the best and close to the Lanes area. Have a good time!
…like the Hope & Ruin for good food and drinks, they also do lots of live music upstairs as well. For a good atmosphere, try The Mash Tun or the Black Lion (both get very busy on weekends so depends if you're ok with that!) If you fancy something a bit more quirky, try the Bee's Mouth, I love it in there but can be hard to find a seat. Honestly I could recommend so many…
The Lanes is more Jewellery shops and restaurants. North Laine is full of alternative shops, record stores etc. Most bars in town have 'alternative' nights. Belushi's has some good night's, if it still exists post Rona. The Yellow Book is pretty alternative. Bee's Mouth, Cowley Club, Green Door Store and Concorde 2 all have gigs pretty regularly. Prince Albert near the station has gigs sometimes too. Komedia has club nights for various alternative music genres. The lines of alternative and mainstream are pretty blurred in a lot of Brighton. You won't struggle.
…and Twisted Lemon are great for cocktails in the general vicinity. Earth and Stars and surrounding pubs (can't remember the names off the top of my head) are close by and nice enough for a pint and a chat. You might struggle a bit at that time on a cold November weekday.. The Bees Mouth is a really cool little dive bar/random grotto open until late every day without being sketchy at all but it's probably half hours walk towards Hove from Komedia. Avoid West Street entirely, as if your life depends on it, and generally you should be fine!
