Brighton's best vegan food, tainted by ownership scandal

7.0/10

Local score

No. 77 of 300 places to eat on r/brighton, from 53 locals across 46 threads.

86% would send a mate. Some say it’s gone downhill lately.

Long considered one of Brighton's best vegetarian/vegan restaurants (the Leek Gratin and wine list get singled out, plus a farm-to-table brunch), but recent threads describe a sharp decline under the Wolfox ownership group: the menu has shrunk to a couple of vegan options, dishes are called overseasoned and unbalanced, and posters cite reports of money laundering and staff being unpaid or harassed.

…a lot of these suggestions. Here's my recs: Bonsai plant kitchen Purezza is an absolute must Oowee (their chicken burgers and dirty fries are absolutely insane. Best I've had - vegan or not) Sunbeds Deli do some really cool stuff like vegan scotch eggs and pork pies Botanique in Hove for something really special. Never fails to impress tbh. I still think about their Leek Gratin on the reg. Awesome wine choices too Planet India is an absolutely incredible authentic vegetarian Indian restaurant with most of the dishes being vegan or can be made vegan If you ever get takeaway…

Botanique is the best I've been to by a mile, one of the best restaurants I've been to in Brighton vegan or otherwise. Would also recommend Kusaki but don't bother with the sushi, and The Roundhill if you want something a bit more casual.

Depending on budget, here’s what I’d recommend: Expensive: - Bonsai (modern asian small plates, a real experience), - Botanique (posh but modern, creative and unique), - Terre a Terre (vegetarian but mostly vegan, unique and delicious but prices have gone up too much recently, haven’t been in years) High-mid range: - Purezza (THE best pizza in the entire world - I usually only like thin pizza bases, but their light and puffy…

…opened and it was one of the best meals I've had in Brighton. Everything was packed with flavour, and the dashi tofu was incredible, so packed with deep rich umami flavours. The portions were definitely too small though. It's what happens to all Wolfox restaurants sadly, like Botanique, they invest heavily at the beginning from carefully choosing all the decor, glassware, crockery, and recruiting a really good head chef, and then once there's a buzz and they've sealed the reputation it just seems to go…
