A Preston Street favourite that people call an old-school, round-table 'Brighton classic', especially for Sunday dim sum (roughly £6-6.50 a portion, about £50 for two) - the black bean beef and soup dumplings get specific praise. Some say it's smart enough to turn you away in casual clothes during a celebration, and a few reckon it's a premium price outside the dim sum menu.

What locals say

. There's loads of restaurants - try and avoid the chains (anywhere with 10+ locations in the UK) as their food is pretty poor value for money generally. Bincho Yakitori is amazing (booking is a must). Permit Room is great modern Indian food. Halisco for great mexican. Gars or China Garden for great chinese, and there's several hot pots. If you want Fish & Chips, Bardsleys is the best, and Harry Ramsden's is a British institution. Have fun!

Oshio is very good for Japanese/Korean. China Garden is also a very good experience for Chinese food and I'll add that the staff there are great. For Thai there is Lemongrass in Hove that is very nice. Shogun Ramen is very good for Ramen but not that nice inside. Somebody else also recommended the big bowl on Preston street and I can vouch for that too!

Hello! I am Chinese and I thought I would share my favourites: - China Garden: Only for the dimsum afternoon lunch, otherwise overpriced. - HK Place: not as fancy but the food there is always amazing. - Shaanxi Noodle Bar: The best hand-pulled noodles in brighton. Homemade dumplings and chinese burgers are amazing too. - Lucky Star or New Era: A better alternative to China Garden…
