A go-to cheap veggie/vegan lunch spot on Kensington Gardens: daily-changing hot mains, sides and sauces canteen-style, soup from £1.50, and repeatedly called 'delicious' even by non-vegetarians. A minority found it bland or pricier than expected (around £10 a plate), with one bad jalfrezi experience and a comment that old Food for Friends used to do it better.

What locals say
…- What the Pitta (very good kebab meat, nice and fresh), - Green Kitchen (serving every breakfast you can imagine, and their homemade bacon and seitan steaks are amazing), - Beelzebab (casual and creative vegan junk food and kebabs, with the pb&j fries being a highlight), - Iydea (healthy build your own plate type deal, with mains and sides, and a variety of smoothies and juices. Fully vegetarian and mostly vegan, very good value). Hope this helps, good luck deciding :)
I love No Catch for fish & chips, Iydea is canteen style and great for lunch. I'm a fan of Terra Terre which is a brighton institution as a vegetarian restaurant, and most of the menu is adaptable to vegan. Infinity foods has a little bakery at the back where you can pick up pastries and pizza. Cornish pasty shop has some incredible vegan cakes.
…on Gardener Street is pay as you feel you can get a v decent meal there cheap, homemade style food. Morelli Zorelli in Hove is good value amazing quality pizza, I just get a marinara sometimes (comes with olives) for £7 and it’s soooo good. There’s a buffet style place called Iydea in North Lanes that’s good value and you could eat loads there! Pompoko is quite decent value (cash only). And Billies for a hash breakfast they’re massive!
Big vote against Iydea, I've been 3 or 4 times and found it very bland and had a jalfrezi that was a borderline hate crime. For something that's healthy and light enough for lunch Happy Maki is poke bowls (and recently un-boycotted due to new owners). There's What the Pitta for an amazing kebab you can eat in our takeaway. And…
