A camera may catch the Northern Lights again tonight after Sunday's Sussex show
The Met Office said the aurora may be a little stronger on Monday night and could be seen further south, into central areas of the UK.
The Northern Lights showed over East and West Sussex in the early hours of Sunday, and there’s another chance tonight. The Argus reported the sightings, with pictures taken by Argus Camera Club members in Bognor and near Arundel.
Met Office forecaster Greg Dewhurst told the Argus the lights “may be a little stronger again on Monday night so could be seen further south into central areas.” He added that a camera may do better than the eye: “Long exposure camera shots may show something each night a little further south than the above visible by eye forecast.”
The Met Office’s space weather forecast says a coronal mass ejection seen on 10 October may give Earth a glancing blow on 12 October, possibly arriving together with a high-speed stream of solar wind due later that day or on 13 October. It rates minor (G1) geomagnetic storms as likely on Monday, with a chance of moderate (G2) spells and a slight chance of a brief strong (G3) one. The chance of storms drops over the next few days.
AuroraWatch UK, run from Lancaster University, issues colour-coded alerts. At amber, it says photographs of the aurora are likely from anywhere in the UK. At red, the aurora is likely to be visible by eye and camera across the country. Even with an alert, local conditions still have to be right.
