The Signalman, in a tunnel under Brighton Station
Hydrocracker stage Charles Dickens' railway ghost story in Cab Road Tunnel, an abandoned tunnel beneath Brighton Station.
Hydrocracker, who have staged shows on Brighton Pier and in Brighton Town Hall, have taken Charles Dickens’ ghost story The Signalman into Cab Road Tunnel, an abandoned railway tunnel under Brighton Station. The adaptation is by Jonathan Holloway, directed by Hydrocracker co-director Nathan Crossan-Smith. Oliver Clayton plays the Signalman.
The show lasts 75 minutes with no interval. The tunnel is unheated and dimly lit, with an uneven floor, so dress warmly and wear sensible shoes. The nearest toilets are five minutes away in the station. It’s recommended for ages 12 and up, and has loud sounds and themes of mental health.
On Saturday 24 October Holloway talks about adapting Dickens after the 4pm show. On Sunday 25 October, Professor Tom Wright of the University of Sussex gives a pre-show talk on Charles Dickens and the railways.
