Lost Dog's Juliet & Romeo plays the Corn Exchange from 12 to 14 November
In Ben Duke's piece, Shakespeare's couple didn't die. They are now 40ish and married, and putting on a show about themselves.
Lost Dog Dance brings Juliet & Romeo to Brighton Dome’s Corn Exchange for three performances between Thursday 12 and Saturday 14 November, at 7.30pm.
In this version, Shakespeare’s couple didn’t die. They are now about 40 and married, and at least one of them is in a mid-life crisis. To deal with it they put on a performance about themselves. Their therapist told them it was a terrible idea. The piece mixes dance, theatre and comedy.
Ben Duke, Lost Dog’s artistic director and an Olivier Award winner, conceived and directed it, and devised it with Solène Weinachter. He wrote and starred in the original production in 2018. It has since been performed more than 200 times in the UK, Europe, Canada, China and New Zealand. Emily Terndrup and John Kendall play the couple on this tour.
“I think we aren’t that honest about relationships and that too many stories focus on how relationships start rather than how they continue,” Duke said in comments published by Brighton and Hove News, which first reported the dates.
The two performers already know the city. Terndrup and Kendall started learning the show in Brighton last summer. “We rehearsed the first few weeks of the show in Brighton last year so our Juliet & Romeo journey started there,” Terndrup said.
Lost Dog is a dance and theatre company based in rural East Sussex. Juliet & Romeo was co-commissioned by Battersea Arts Centre and The Place, and is funded by Arts Council England.
