100% would send a mate. Still recommended in 2025.

Consistently recommended as one of Brighton's best Indian restaurants, with several diners calling the food surprisingly good, authentic, and 'exactly like how you get them in India.' It's on the fancier and quieter side, a main, naan and coffee running to about £30, and works fine solo.

What locals say

Hi - ex chef de partie here. Kitgum on Preston Circus was delicious when I went, it's small plates but the flavours are beautiful, me and my partner went and had a cocktail each and 6 plates for around £70. My roommate is Indian and has recommended Jamun to me a few times, they're also one of 4 restaurants that have just been voted in the good food guide. The Southern Belle also does amazing roasts on Sunday and they also do a mid up week deal - Taco Tuesday, 3 for 2 from 5pm-9pm. If none of that sounds your thing, there's a place called Pomoko right opposite…

If you're looking for a really good meal I would go for VEL in Kemptown - I would say best South Indian/Sri Lankan style place in the city. If you fancy somewhere a bit fancier I have heard good things about Jamun. Personally I don't think dishoom/permit room and mowgli are that good on quality for the money you pay but they're accessible and nicely decorated, etc.

Went only once, but although service and food was decent, it was very overpriced and incredibly noisy. Would rather go to chilli pickle, jamun or dishoom for Indian. Also have a look at etci, or the wildcard pic: thewitchez.

This is the best answer, closure of the curry leaf cafe notwithstanding. I would add Manjus on Trafalgar street for a vegetarian option. Jamun on west street is surprisingly good and authentic. Planet India is also good for basic vegetarian options. Truth is, Brighton doesn’t really, or didn’t until chilli pickle arrived have proper Indian food. The choice is better…
