Albion Women beat Charlton 5-1 at the Amex for their first WSL win of the season
Kiko Seike scored twice, and captain Maisie Symonds set a club record with her 87th WSL appearance.
Albion Women came from behind to beat Charlton Athletic 5-1 at the Amex on Sunday. It was Albion’s first WSL win of the season.
Charlton scored in the third minute through Cassandra Korhonen. Albion equalised on 25 minutes when Olivia Garcia pulled the ball back from the byline and Kiko Seike finished inside the far post. Garcia set up the second as well, in first-half stoppage time, for Fran Kirby to steer past the Charlton goalkeeper Sophie Whitehouse.
Seike scored again eight minutes into the second half. Two goals from corners came in stoppage time: substitute Marisa Olislagers scored direct from one, and Gabby George headed in Kirby’s.
It was Arturo Ruiz’s first WSL win since he took charge on the eve of the season. Albion had gone seven league games without a win before Sunday.
“These three points are absolutely going to give us a lot of confidence,” Ruiz said. “It started in the worst possible way. But I think the reaction is one of the things we need to put more value on because it wasn’t easy.”
The game was also a milestone for the captain, Maisie Symonds. She has now played 87 WSL games for Albion, more than any other player.
The league stops for the international break. Albion’s next match is away at Manchester City, the unbeaten leaders, at the Joie Stadium on Sunday 18 October.
